Support for men’s mental health

Therapist Steven Rishard has a deep passion for providing support for men’s mental health. He is deeply passionate about helping men break through all the mythologies of “manhood” so that they can get right with themselves and the ones they love, helping them be better fathers, husbands, sons, and leaders.  It’s a tricky time for men in our country, always has been really. There are a lot of false narratives leading them into greater numbers of depression and loneliness.  

Many men think:

“I don’t know why I feel the way I do.”

“I don’t know what to do next.”  

“I don’t understand why I can’t communicate”. 

Steven’s clients are kept awake because they feel lost, or stuck, anxious, stymied by their anger, marooned in their grief. They are worried about judgment from others, or about not meeting some mysterious standard. They are afraid of losing someone they love, or afraid they have missed something. They worry about uncertainty. They want answers. They want better tools for living. 

The first step in how Steven’s work support men’s mental health is to SLOW DOWN. We live in a world that is obsessed with efficiency and speed. “Time is money” right? There is a pressure to move and do all the things all the time and we want answers now.  But our hearts do not move at the speed of light, and our brains are no match for the computers in our pockets. When we purposely slow ourselves down, we set the terms for our engagement in the world, rather than feeling like we have to catch up. When we slow down, we listen with greater clarity, we engage in curiosity, and we give ourselves a chance to breathe, and maybe shift our perspective.
